The bog men of Ireland are corpses that have been preserved in that country’s peatland for centuries, many of whom obviously died horrifyingly violent deaths. It has been posited that they may have been Kings, ritually sacrificed by their own people for failing in their Kingship: invasion, drought, famine or other disasters being a clear sign that they had ceased to please their spiritual bride, the Goddess of the Earth.

My hands are coupled with the cold, black earth and
The chill of night is clasped around my bones;
The strength of Autumn fails and now expires and
For months the dark will now outlast the day...

I wait, with fear (I wield the bronze and steel)
To sight the pale, weak Sun (I wear the Rowan's mark)
The Goddess makes her wishes known (And the feather of the crow)
In the bleeding of the sky.

The crops are failing, my people fade
On our Southern border, we are assailed,
My eyes are shut to my Second Sight and
The spirits of our Dead have all abandoned me.

My vigil is my own
I'm King of the Wasting Throne.

The Solstice Sun will seal my fate (Here comes the Dawn, here comes the Dawn).
A bloody Sun will seal my fate (Here comes the Dawn, I feel my spirit break).

My eyes are burned by the strength of revelation
As my fickle Wife betrays me to my death;
I see the Coffin Ships, I see the Famine
But they drag me to the bog for sacrifice...

Slice off my teats (I am the King no more)
And hack at my body bared (with violence break the past)
Tie a rope around my neck (and chain my spirit here)
Then choke me 'til I die.

Into the peat
I pitch and then I sink
One hundred fighting generations
Curse this restless place,
Embalmed, condemned
I haunt this barren land
Forgotten and alone, my sorrow knows no end.

Two thousand years have passed,
Exhumed by time,
In the air I am released
To find my peace at last:
My spirit has been freed! * 3
